A viral video recently caused confusion by claiming that ₹500 notes will be banned in India starting March 2026. The video, posted by the YouTube channel ‘Capital TV’, said that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will stop the circulation of ₹500 currency notes. However, the Indian government has now officially denied these claims.
Through its fact-checking handle on platform X (formerly Twitter), the government confirmed that no such decision has been made and that the ₹500 notes continue to be valid legal tender.

These notes will carry the signature of the new RBI Governor, Sanjay Malhotra. The design of the notes will remain the same as the existing ₹20 notes, except for the updated signature. The RBI also confirmed that all previously issued ₹20 notes will continue to be valid. The government reminded the public once again to stay cautious, avoid falling for fake news, and always rely on official announcements for accurate information about currency and financial matters.
