Russia Targets Ukraine’s Gas Infrastructure in Overnight Drone Barrage

As drones darkened the skies, Ukraine fought back—but the damage was already done. What’s next for Poltava?

On March 28, Russian forces launched a massive drone assault on Ukraine’s central Poltava region. The attack targeted storage facilities and an administrative building belonging to a local gas producer. Governor Volodymyr Kohut confirmed that spare parts for repairing wells and processing equipment were among the damaged items.

Ukraine’s Defense

The Ukrainian air force managed to shoot down 89 of the 163 drones launched overnight. Another 51 drones failed to reach their targets, likely due to electronic countermeasures. Despite these efforts, the remaining drones caused significant destruction.

Civilian Infrastructure in Flames

The strike sparked fires covering over 2,500 square meters and damaged a transformer, briefly cutting power to parts of Poltava. Ukrainian officials accused Russia of deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure, calling it a “cynical” move that endangered lives.

Odesa Also Hit

Meanwhile, in southern Odesa, drones injured one person and set fire to private homes, adding to the night’s chaos.

As Ukraine assesses the damage, the world watches—will these attacks escalate, or will Ukraine’s defenses hold firm?
