Jagdeep Dhankhar

Jagdeep Dhankhar has officially resigned from the post of Vice President of India. His sudden exit has left a big question: who will take his place?

Dhankhar’s term was supposed to last until 2027. But on a day full of drama in Parliament, he stepped down, shocking many. Dhankhar had earlier served as West Bengal Governor and became Vice President in 2022 as the NDA’s pick.

Now, Deputy Chairperson Harivansh Narayan Singh will act as the Rajya Sabha Chairperson until a new Vice President is elected.

What the Constitution Says

According to Article 68(2) of the Constitution, a new Vice President must be elected “as soon as possible” after a vacancy. The new VP will get a full five-year term.

Since the BJP-led NDA holds a majority in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, they are likely to decide the next VP.

Who Are the Top Contenders?

Right now, many names are doing the rounds. The buzz started on social media and quickly grabbed headlines.

One of the biggest names? Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. According to journalist Sameer Chougaonkar, Nitish might soon become the Vice President. He also claimed that BJP will pick a new CM for Bihar, while Nitish’s son, Nishant Kumar, could become Deputy CM.

A BJP MLA from Bihar, Haribhushan Thakur Bachoul, added fuel to the fire. He told News18, “Everyone wants Nitish Kumar as Vice President. It would be a great move.”

Another strong name is Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. His name had come up during the 2022 VP election too. Many see him as a respected leader who could easily take on this role.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor is also being talked about. After his support for Operation Sindoor and recent closeness with the Modi government, Tharoor is seen by some as a surprise choice. But this has caused a rift within the Congress party.

BJP chief JP Nadda’s name is also buzzing. He’s close to PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. With his BJP president term ending soon, some believe this could be a smooth transition.

When Will the Election Happen?

The election for the next Vice President must take place within 60 days. So the countdown has already started.

This is not just a routine appointment. With Jagdeep Dhankhar stepping down, the new VP pick could shape the mood of Parliament for years.
