Marvel Studios has officially changed the name of its movie Thunderbolts to The New Avengers. The announcement was made on social media on Monday, along with a new movie poster showing the updated title.

This is not just a social media trick. Big movie chains like AMC Theaters and Fandango are already using the New Avengers title to sell tickets.
At the movie’s Hollywood premiere last week, Marvel shared a fun video showing the cast peeling off the Thunderbolts name on a poster to reveal The New Avengers underneath. Actor Sebastian Stan was also seen changing posters at a bus stop in another promotional video.

Fans had long wondered why Thunderbolts had an asterisk in its title. Now we know—it was a hint! At the end of the movie, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine announces that the characters Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, U.S. Agent, and Sentry/Bob Reynolds are the new Avengers team.
Changing the title in the second week is a smart business move by Marvel and Disney. While Thunderbolts made a strong start with $76 million in its first weekend, movies with the Avengers name usually earn billions. The new title might attract even more people to watch the film, especially now that they know it’s the start of a new Avengers chapter.
These new Avengers will return in the upcoming movie Avengers: Doomsday, which is currently being filmed in London. That movie will also feature Captain America (Sam Wilson), the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men.
Actor Robert Downey Jr., who will play Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, accidentally mentioned The New Avengers in an Instagram post, but later edited it.
