In a heartbreaking incident, an elderly couple and their 38-year-old son were found hanging in their home in Kasba, Kolkata, on Tuesday evening. Police believe the three may have died by suicide due to financial troubles.

The police were alerted when neighbors noticed the family had locked themselves in and were not answering phone calls. Officers from the Kasba police station broke into their second-floor apartment in Rajdanga and discovered the bodies of Sarajit Bhattacharya (70), his wife Gargi (68), and their son Ayushman.

A note was found in the home, stating that no one should be blamed for their deaths. Although the note didn’t mention any specific reason, the police suspect financial distress may have led to this tragic step.

Neighbors shared that the family had only moved into the apartment seven months ago. Sarajit had previously worked in a private company and later tried property broking. Gargi was a retired schoolteacher. Ayushman did not have a stable job and had a physical disability that made it difficult for him to walk.

Locals said the family rarely went outside and had been struggling financially, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, which worsened their situation. Some mentioned that Sarajit had spoken about their money problems, but no one expected such a tragic outcome.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), Rupesh Kumar, confirmed that a note was found indicating the family had taken this step willingly. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday. Although some neighbors claimed to have seen injuries on the mother and son, police have not confirmed this.

Investigators are now trying to contact the family’s relatives and friends to gather more information.
