Hyundai Creta, one of India’s best-selling SUVs, might soon be offered with a hybrid powertrain. The move comes as Hyundai Motor India explores new engine options for its most loved SUV. This shift could bring even more variety to Indian buyers who are already spoilt for choice.

Right now, Hyundai Creta is sold with petrol, diesel, and even electric versions. But with hybrid cars gaining popularity in India, Hyundai is eyeing a new spot in this growing segment. In fact, hybrid car sales in India more than doubled in two years—from 41,477 units in FY23 to over 1 lakh in FY25. That’s a clear sign of demand rising.

Why a Hybrid Hyundai Creta Makes Sense

Let’s face it—CNG won’t cut it for Creta fans. As per Tarun Garg, COO of Hyundai Motor India, Creta buyers want power and torque. That’s exactly where hybrid technology fits in. It gives better fuel economy without compromising performance. Garg hinted, “Maybe they will like a hybrid.”

If Hyundai launches a hybrid Creta, it will join the likes of the Maruti Grand Vitara, Toyota Hyryder, and Honda City e:HEV—models that already drive the hybrid market in India.

The Powertrain Options So Far

The ICE Creta comes in three engine options:

  • 1.5L MPi Petrol
  • 1.5L Turbo GDi Petrol
  • 1.5L U2 CRDi Diesel

Transmission includes manual, CVT, DCT, and torque converter options.

The Creta EV, already unveiled, offers 42 kWh and 51.4 kWh batteries, with a range of 390 to 473 km. Now, imagine placing a hybrid right in the middle—for buyers who want the best of both worlds.

What This Means for the Market

The Creta hybrid won’t just add another variant—it could shake up the whole hybrid SUV game. With over 12.5 lakh units sold since its 2015 launch, Creta already has a strong base. A hybrid would make the brand even stronger, especially as more rivals like Tata, Mahindra, and Kia also explore hybrid territory.

Internally, Hyundai already has access to plug-in, strong hybrid, and even hydrogen technologies via the Hyundai Motor Group. The question now is not if, but when.

Final Thoughts

Hybrid is no longer a “premium” tech. It’s fast becoming the smart middle ground between ICE and EV. And if anyone can lead that shift in India—it’s the Hyundai Creta.

Expect more updates soon. And don’t be surprised if the next Creta you see is quiet, smooth, and running on hybrid power.
