The classic film Umrao Jaan, first released in 1981, is coming back to theatres with improved visuals and sound. Director Muzaffar Ali is excited to share this beautifully restored version with a new generation of viewers.
A Special Film for All Ages
In a recent interview, Muzaffar Ali spoke about his hopes for the re-release. He’s curious to see how young audiences will respond to the film, which is full of poetry, music, and emotion. For those who have seen it before, it will be a nostalgic experience, while for new viewers, it’s a chance to discover something timeless.

What Makes Umrao Jaan So Special?
According to Ali, the film’s charm lies in its many layers – touching poetry, soulful music, beautiful costumes, and of course, Rekha’s unforgettable performance. He called it “a poetic musical” and shared that the entire film was built around a single inspiring line of poetry. “Poetry was the soul of the story,” he said.
Rekha Was Always the First and Final Choice
When Ali started working on Umrao Jaan, he knew right away that only Rekha could play the lead role. Her natural grace and connection to music and poetry made her the perfect fit. Once she agreed to do the film, everything fell into place. “There was no turning back,” Ali added.
Star-Studded Premiere in Mumbai
To celebrate the re-release, a special screening will be held on June 26 at PVR Maison, Jio World Drive, BKC, Mumbai. Muzaffar Ali and Rekha will host the event, and many Bollywood stars are expected to attend, including Aamir Khan, Alia Bhatt, Ayushmann Khurrana, Kriti Sanon, Tabu, and many others.
