A Bangladeshi woman has been sent to jail in Tripura after she illegally crossed the India-Bangladesh border to meet her boyfriend from Karnataka, whom she had met on Instagram. The man has also been arrested.

The woman, Gulshana Akhter, lives in Palsa village in the Bogura district of Bangladesh. Around eight months ago, she started talking to Datta Yadav, a man from Karnataka, on Instagram. Their online friendship grew stronger over time with chats, video calls, and photo sharing.

Eventually, both of them decided to meet in person. Gulshana crossed the international border, and Datta travelled from Bangalore to a border village called Harihordula in Tripura’s Sepahijala district to meet her.

Their meeting was emotional, but short-lived. The Border Security Force (BSF) spotted them and handed them over to the Madhupur police station.

The next day, both were taken to court and sent to 14-day judicial custody.

Police have registered cases against them under the Passports Act, the Foreigners Act, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. Authorities are now investigating whether a human trafficking network helped Gulshana cross the border illegally.

As she sits in a jail cell far from home, and her boyfriend in another, their story of love through social media has taken a serious turn—raising questions about online relationships, illegal immigration, and national security.
