The RTX 40-series GPUs just got a surprise upgrade. Nvidia’s powerful Smooth Motion frame generation, once only for RTX 50-series, now works on RTX 40-series cards too. But there’s a catch—you’ll need to unlock it yourself.

Earlier this year, Nvidia launched Smooth Motion. It’s a feature that creates extra frames in games using software, not the game engine. This makes gameplay look smoother, like AMD’s Fluid Motion Frames. But here’s the problem: Nvidia only released it for their newer RTX 50-series GPUs.

Now, that has changed.

Thanks to some GPU enthusiasts on the Guru3D forums, you can now use Smooth Motion on RTX 40-series GPUs. It’s not officially supported yet, but it does work. Users have tested it with games like World of Warcraft using an RTX 4090 and saw frame rates double.

How to Unlock Smooth Motion on RTX 40-Series GPUs

To turn on Smooth Motion, you’ll need two things:

  1. Nvidia Developer Driver (version 590.26)
  2. Nvidia Profile Inspector

First, sign up for a free Nvidia Developer Account. Download and install the developer driver. Then open Nvidia Profile Inspector, and find the Smooth Motion setting under the “Common” section. That’s it—you can now enable it.

The setting still says it’s only for RTX 50-series, but users have shown that it works on RTX 40-series too.

Why This Is a Big Deal

This is huge news for RTX 40-series GPU owners. You’re getting access to a premium feature without upgrading your hardware. Yes, it’s a bit of a DIY process, and it’s technically a beta driver, so expect some bugs. But for smoother frame rates in games like Cyberpunk 2077 or Elden Ring, it might be worth it.

The feature works with DirectX 11, DirectX 12, and Vulkan, which covers most modern games. That means more smooth gameplay across your entire library.

Nvidia’s Silent Rollout Strategy

Nvidia hasn’t officially launched Smooth Motion for RTX 40-series yet. But this hidden support in the dev driver shows they’re testing it behind the scenes. Some users say the quality isn’t as sharp as on the RTX 50 cards—but that might change before the full release.

Compared to AMD’s solution, which works on more hardware and is easier to access, Nvidia’s Smooth Motion has been flying under the radar. This sneak peek on RTX 40 cards is a solid step forward.

RTX 40-series GPUs just got a hidden boost. If you’re willing to put in a little effort, you can get one of Nvidia’s coolest features before it officially drops. It’s not perfect yet, but it’s a major win for current-gen users who don’t want to shell out for the latest cards.
