Unseasonal Rainfall Fatalities Surge in India and Nepal
Since April 10, 2025, unseasonal rainfall fatalities have claimed nearly 100 lives across India and Nepal. What began as unexpected pre-monsoon showers quickly turned into deadly weather, bringing rain, lightning, and destruction to millions.

Bihar and Uttar Pradesh Hit Hard
In India’s eastern state of Bihar, at least 64 people have lost their lives due to rain-related incidents. Most deaths were caused by wall collapses, electrocution, and lightning strikes. Several areas remain waterlogged, and rescue efforts are ongoing.
In neighboring Uttar Pradesh, local media reports over 20 deaths, again linked to thunderstorms, heavy rain, and lightning. Rural districts with poor housing and infrastructure are the worst affected.
Nepal Battles Lightning Tragedies
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) in Nepal confirmed 8 deaths due to lightning strikes and heavy downpours. Many remote regions faced power outages and blocked roads as landslides added to the chaos.

Weather Warnings Still in Place
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a multi-hazard alert across the country.
- Western India is facing a severe heatwave, while
- Eastern and Central India are bracing for more thunderstorms.
The IMD predicts that gusty winds, lightning, and heavy rainfall may continue till April 13. People have been advised to avoid open spaces and stay indoors during storms.

Climate Alarm: Why This Matters
April is usually known for rising temperatures and heatwaves in India. The monsoon generally arrives in June. However, unseasonal rainfall fatalities like these are becoming more frequent.
In fact, the IMD had already warned that April 2025 would be hotter than normal, adding stress to both humans and crops. Sudden, unpredicted rains not only lead to loss of life but also damage agriculture, homes, and essential services.
According to experts, climate change may be fueling these unusual patterns—where scorching heat mixes with violent rain, creating deadly outcomes.
Government Response
State authorities in both India and Nepal have announced compensation for the families of victims. Emergency teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), are on alert in high-risk zones. Relief camps and medical services have been deployed.
Still, many vulnerable communities remain cut off, awaiting help and resources.
Staying Safe
Authorities are urging citizens to:
- Stay indoors during thunderstorms
- Avoid using electrical appliances
- Do not take shelter under trees
- Monitor local weather updates
Looking Ahead
The recent unseasonal rainfall fatalities are a grim reminder of how unpredictable weather is becoming. With climate extremes on the rise, better preparedness, stronger infrastructure, and real-time warnings will be crucial in saving lives.
