Amazon is back at the AI table. The tech giant is reportedly planning another multibillion-dollar investment in Anthropic, an artificial intelligence startup it already backed heavily last year.
In November 2024, Amazon invested $4 billion in Anthropic. This deal made headlines because Anthropic is seen as a key rival to OpenAI — the name behind ChatGPT. Now, Amazon is considering going even deeper.
According to a new Financial Times report, Amazon could raise its total stake in Anthropic beyond the $8 billion already committed. This would make Amazon one of the top shareholders in the AI firm, ahead of Google, which has poured in more than $3 billion.
Neither Amazon nor Anthropic have confirmed the new deal, but insiders say talks are serious. Amazon’s focus on Anthropic shows it wants to stay in the race with AI leaders like Google and OpenAI.
Chasing the AI Dream
Amazon has made huge moves in cloud computing, e-commerce, and smart devices. But in the world of artificial intelligence, it is still playing catch-up. Google and OpenAI have already launched popular AI tools for users and businesses.
Anthropic, however, offers Amazon a chance to catch up quickly. The company is working on large language models — the same type of tech behind ChatGPT. By partnering closely with Anthropic, Amazon gets access to advanced AI research and tools for its cloud platform, AWS.
“We realised early that we share the same big goals,” said Dan Grossman, Amazon’s vice-president of worldwide corporate development, in a previous statement. “The size of our investment shows our ambition.”
Why It Matters Now
AI is more than a buzzword. It’s reshaping how companies hire, build products, and stay ahead. Tech giants are spending billions not just on tech, but also on talent. Hiring top AI researchers has become a global race.
Amazon wants to lead in AI services for business, even if it hasn’t launched a viral chatbot yet. Anthropic’s work helps Amazon boost its own AI tools, giving customers smarter solutions through AWS.
This move tells us one thing: Amazon isn’t just watching the AI game — it wants to win. With Google already in the mix and OpenAI getting Microsoft’s support, Amazon knows it needs to invest fast and smart.
If this new deal goes through, Amazon could solidify itself as the number one partner of Anthropic. And that could change the power balance in the global AI race.
For now, one thing is clear. Amazon is betting big on the future of AI — and it’s not backing down.
