Brain Tumour & Health Insurance: What’s Covered in 2025?

On World Brain Tumour Day 2025, experts have emphasized the rising cost of brain tumour treatments and the crucial role health insurance plays in reducing the financial burden. In India, most standard health insurance policies cover major aspects of brain tumour treatment such as surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and hospitalisation.

Experts like Hari Radhakrishnan from the Insurance Brokers Association of India confirm that all policies include brain tumour treatment unless it’s a pre-existing condition that was not disclosed. G. Srinivasan, CEO of Galaxy Health Insurance, added that long-term oral chemotherapy and advanced procedures like robotic and stereotactic surgeries are also covered under many plans, though some come with specific sub-limits. Vaibhav Kathju, CEO of InkaSure, agrees that most insurance plans support primary treatments like surgery and hospital care.

Despite this coverage, the cost of treatment can be quite high. Surgery in a private hospital can range from ₹3 lakh to ₹7 lakh, and in more serious or prolonged cases, the total cost can go up to ₹25 lakh.

While health insurance helps by covering many of these expenses, it doesn’t pay for everything. There are some key exclusions, such as a mandatory 30-day waiting period after buying a new policy and a three-year waiting period for pre-existing conditions. Conditions like epilepsy or genetic brain disorders are often excluded permanently, and unproven or experimental treatments are also not covered.

There has also been a noticeable rise in health insurance claims related to brain tumours and other neurological conditions. However, many indirect expenses such as second opinions, rehabilitation, travel for treatment, and income loss during recovery are typically not covered. To fill this gap, experts recommend considering a cancer-specific insurance policy in addition to your regular health plan. These policies often offer a lump sum payment upon diagnosis, helping families manage lifestyle and non-medical expenses more easily. Overall, while standard health insurance offers important support, understanding what’s included and what’s not is essential for full financial protection during serious illnesses like brain tumours.
