BSF constable Purnam Kumar Shaw, a resident of West Bengal, returned to India on Wednesday through the Wagah-Attari border. He had been held by Pakistan since April 23 after accidentally crossing the international border near Ferozepur, Punjab.

Shaw, 40, was captured by Pakistani Rangers just a day after the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which killed 26 people and increased tension between India and Pakistan.
His return remained uncertain for weeks, but after a ceasefire agreement between the two countries, he was finally sent back home.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had assured Shaw’s wife, Rajni, of full support. During the time of his detention, Rajni, who is pregnant, along with other family members, went to Ferozepur to meet BSF officials and seek updates.

“I was patient all these days, but I was very worried. I even wanted to meet the Chief Minister and ask her to help bring my husband back by requesting Prime Minister Modi,” Rajni told Reporters.
The situation between India and Pakistan became worse after the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam. In response, India launched “Operation Sindoor,” which destroyed nine terrorist camps in Pakistan and PoK. Continuous shelling and firing followed along the borders of Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, and Gujarat.
