COVID-19 Surge in India: Cases Cross 3,300, Kerala Worst Hit

COVID-19 cases in India went above 3,000 on May 31. Two new variants, called NB.1.8.1 and LF.7, are spreading quickly. Officials say these variants cause mild symptoms for most people. But, since January 2025, 26 people have died, including 4 new deaths reported in Delhi, Karnataka, Kerala, and Uttar Pradesh. Because of this, people are becoming more careful.

On May 31, cases jumped by 685 in just one day — from 2,710 to 3,395.

State-wise COVID-19 Cases

  • Kerala has the most cases, with 1,336 active cases.
  • Maharashtra has 467 cases and reported 7 deaths.
  • Delhi now has 375 active cases.
  • Gujarat, Karnataka, and West Bengal each have around 200 cases. West Bengal has no deaths.
  • Gujarat saw 86 new cases on May 31, reaching 234 cases.
  • Tamil Nadu has 185 cases, and Uttar Pradesh has 117.
  • Sikkim has reported no COVID-19 cases so far.

Kerala is the Worst Hit

Kerala is the only state with more than 1,300 cases, with 189 new cases in one day. The state is carefully watching flu-like and serious respiratory illnesses. Officials say the rise in cases is not a big worry because hospitals are ready.

A health official from Kerala said public hospitals will do more RT-PCR tests, which help detect the virus better. Private hospitals are mostly using Rapid Antigen tests.

Doctors advise people not to panic. Medical facilities are prepared for the rise in cases. If you have symptoms like a stuffy nose, nausea, stomach problems, or sore throat for more than 4 days, you should get an RT-PCR test.
