West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced on Thursday that the state government will give ₹1.10 lakh to each of the 40,000 Durga Puja committees in the state this year.

Speaking at a meeting with Durga Puja organisers, she said the grant will help the committees manage the expenses of Bengal’s biggest festival, and also support their role in cultural and community activities.

“Durga Puja is not just a religious event. It’s a cultural celebration that brings people together. We want to make sure organisers don’t feel burdened by costs,” said Mamata Banerjee.

She also explained how the government support has grown over the years:

  • ₹10,000 in 2018
  • ₹25,000 in 2019
  • ₹50,000 during the COVID-19 period
  • ₹85,000 in 2024
  • Now increased to ₹1.10 lakh in 2025

No Charges from Government Departments

Mamata Banerjee also announced that government departments like the Fire Brigade, Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), municipalities, and panchayats will not charge any taxes or service fees from Puja organisers this year.

“No service provider will take fees from the Puja committees. We are here to support you,” she added.

Appeal to Help Migrant Workers

The Chief Minister also urged Puja committees to support migrant workers returning to West Bengal from other states, saying they are facing difficulties and need relief.

“Let’s help those who are coming back home after being troubled in other states. Show them care and respect,” she said.

Durga Puja, which is recognized by UNESCO as a cultural heritage, is one of the most important and celebrated festivals in West Bengal.

Before making the announcement, Mamata Banerjee had a meeting with several Puja committees at Netaji Indoor Stadium in Kolkata.
