A mild earthquake of 3.6 magnitude hit Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday at 7:36 pm, as reported by the National Center for Seismology. The earthquake occurred 9 km below the ground. Its exact location was at 32.96°N latitude and 74.71°E longitude.
Thankfully, there were no reports of any injuries or damage to property.

This is not the first time the region has experienced tremors recently. In April, a stronger earthquake of 5.3 magnitude hit parts of Pakistan, and tremors were felt in several areas of Kashmir including Srinagar, Jammu, and Shopian. That quake happened 10 km deep and also did not cause any harm.
In March, another earthquake of 5.2 magnitude shook Kargil in Ladakh. People in Jammu and Srinagar also felt the tremors. That earthquake had a depth of 15 km.
The region of Leh and Ladakh falls in Seismic Zone-IV, which means it is more likely to experience earthquakes. This is because it lies in the tectonically active Himalayan region, where such tremors happen often.

India is divided into four seismic zones—Zone II, III, IV, and V—based on the risk of earthquakes. Zone V is the most earthquake-prone, while Zone II is the least. Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh lie in one of the higher-risk zones, making them more vulnerable to earthquakes.
