Swedish activist Greta Thunberg was deported from Israel on June 10, 2025, after being detained aboard a Gaza-bound humanitarian ship intercepted by Israeli forces in international waters. The yacht, sailing under a British flag, was attempting to breach the naval blockade on Gaza.
The 21-year-old climate activist, along with 11 others, was detained when Israeli forces boarded their vessel, Madleen, early Monday. The group was carrying rice, baby formula, and basic aid supplies. Israel, however, dismissed the voyage as a “pro-Hamas publicity stunt.”

From Open Waters to Ashdod Port
According to Israel’s Foreign Ministry, the ship was escorted to the Israeli port of Ashdod. Thunberg and the other activists were then moved to Ben Gurion airport. She flew to France on Tuesday, continuing her return to Sweden.
Before being detained, Thunberg posted a video calling the Israeli interception “a kidnapping.” She urged global pressure on Sweden to secure their release.
Israel’s Response: Not Buying the Drama
Israeli officials were not amused. “The tiny amount of aid not consumed by the ‘celebrities’ will be sent to Gaza through real humanitarian channels,” the Ministry said.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump also chimed in: “I think Israel has enough problems without kidnapping Greta Thunberg… She’s a young, angry person. She needs anger management classes.”
Which is rich coming from the original anger influencer.
Gaza: Still Under Siege
Israel has kept a naval blockade on Gaza since 2007, aiming to stop weapons from reaching Hamas. But after the October 7, 2023 attacks, where over 1,200 Israelis were killed and 251 taken hostage, the blockade tightened further.
Since then, over 54,000 Palestinians have died, according to health officials in Hamas-run Gaza. Most of the region has been reduced to rubble. It’s one of the worst humanitarian disasters of our time.
But when a few idealists tried to send help, the world called it a stunt.
Greta Thunberg’s Gaza voyage wasn’t going to end the war or change the blockade. But it put Gaza back in the headlines. Sometimes, a small boat makes bigger waves than a fleet.
