After 8 years of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in India, most businesses feel positive about how it has improved the country’s tax system. However, many also believe that there is room for improvement.

A new survey by Deloitte India, involving 960 business leaders from different industries like technology, telecom, banking, energy, and more, shows that 85% of businesses are happy with their GST experience so far. This includes both small and large companies.

What’s Working Well

  • Businesses say GST has become more efficient thanks to digitization.
  • Most like how e-invoicing data is automatically used to fill out tax returns.
  • The GST system has helped resolve more on-ground tax issues compared to earlier years.
  • A majority of businesses (99%) have updated their IT systems to handle GST audits and notices.
  • Confidence in GST has grown from 59% in 2022 to 85% in 2025.

What Businesses Want Improved

Even though GST is working better now, companies still want some changes:

  • A faster and more effective system to resolve tax disputes.
  • Clear and fair GST rates across all industries.
  • A smoother refund process.
  • Better coordination between central and state tax departments.
  • Support for exporters by relaxing rules.
  • More clarity on how GST applies to modern digital businesses.

Businesses also mentioned that sometimes tax officers make rushed decisions or interpret rules too strictly, which creates confusion and delays.

Moving Towards GST 2.0

According to the survey, both the government and the business community are now looking forward to the next phase—GST 2.0, which should be more:

  • Transparent
  • Business-friendly
  • Growth-focused

Deloitte says the government is open to feedback and ready to work with industries to make GST even better.
