The Israel-Hezbollah Conflict: A Story of Broken Ceasefires and Rising Tensions
The Spark That Lit the Fire
On October 8, 2023, Hezbollah, backed by Iran, began firing rockets at Israel in support of Hamas, just one day after Hamas launched a deadly attack on southern Israel. This marked the start of a fierce border conflict that would drag on for over a year.
A Year of Escalation
Israeli airstrikes pounded southern Lebanon, while Hezbollah retaliated with attacks on northern Israel. Tens of thousands fled their homes on both sides. Though neither side wanted all-out war, the clashes continued, pausing only briefly during a Gaza ceasefire in late November 2023.

Key Turning Points
- January 2024: Israel assassinated Hamas deputy leader Saleh al-Arouri in Beirut, followed by top Hezbollah commander Wissam Tawil. Hezbollah responded with explosive drones.
- July 2024: A strike on the Golan Heights killed 12 youths, escalating tensions further.
- September 2024: Israel intensified attacks, killing over 550 in a single day. Days later, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was assassinated in Beirut.
Ceasefire—Then Another Breakdown
In November 2024, a truce was agreed—Hezbollah would withdraw, and Israel would pull back troops. But by January 2025, Israel claimed Lebanon hadn’t fully complied and kept its forces in place.
Latest Strike: Will War Return?
On March 28, 2025, Israel struck Beirut’s southern suburbs for the first time since the ceasefire, raising fears of renewed conflict. With both sides refusing to back down, the question remains: Is another full-scale war inevitable?
