MakeMyTrip, a big travel booking company, has launched a new feature called Seat Availability Forecast to help people know when train seats are likely to sell out.

The company found that about 40% of people book train tickets in several steps over a few days. Many of these people, around 70%, end up booking waitlisted tickets because confirmed seats are not available when they finally decide.

In India, train tickets can be booked up to 60 days before the travel date. But most travelers only decide their plans closer to the journey. Since demand for tickets changes a lot from week to week, the time when confirmed seats sell out also changes. For example, in April, most fast trains were fully booked about 13 days before travel. In May, due to more demand, trains were sold out more than 20 days in advance.

This means even if travelers know which train they want, they often don’t know how long seats will be available. This makes it harder to plan trips on time.

The new Seat Availability Forecast feature is now available on the MakeMyTrip app and website during train booking.

Rajesh Magow, Co-founder and CEO of MakeMyTrip, said this feature is made to help Indian train travelers by using data and making train booking easier and less stressful.
