During the monsoon season, the chances of falling sick due to dirty water and food go up. Diseases like diarrhoea and cholera become more common because of poor hygiene and sanitation.

Dr. Jayanti Khura, a specialist in internal medicine at Manipal Hospital, Bhubaneshwar, says these diseases can be prevented if we take some simple precautions. She shared 5 useful tips to stay healthy this rainy season:

1. Wash Your Hands Regularly

Keeping your hands clean is the best way to stay safe. Always wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially before eating. This helps remove germs that can cause diarrhoea.

2. Drink Clean Water

Contaminated water is a major reason for getting sick during monsoon. Make sure to drink only clean water. If you have a water purifier at home, use it. If not, boil the water and store it in a clean, closed container before drinking.

3. Wash Fruits and Vegetables Properly

Before eating or cooking, always wash fruits and vegetables with clean water. Do not leave cut fruits or veggies open, as flies can sit on them and make them dirty.

4. Eat Fresh Food

Always try to eat freshly prepared food. If the food is cold, reheat it before eating. Store leftovers in the refrigerator and always cover your food to keep it safe from insects.

5. Avoid Street Food

Street food may look tempting, but during monsoon, it’s safer to avoid it. Many roadside vendors do not follow proper hygiene, which increases your chances of getting sick. Try to eat home-cooked meals during this season.
