Air India CEO Campbell Wilson has confirmed that the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner involved in the tragic crash on June 12, 2025, was properly maintained and showed no issues before the flight. He stated that the aircraft had undergone its last major inspection in June 2023, with the next one scheduled for December 2025. Additionally, the right engine was completely overhauled in March 2025, while the left engine was inspected in April 2025. Regular maintenance checks showed no problems with either the aircraft or its engines before takeoff.

Following the crash of Flight AI171, which claimed the lives of 241 passengers and crew members, along with 34 people on the ground, Air India has introduced enhanced safety checks across its entire Boeing 787 fleet. As a precautionary step, the airline has also temporarily reduced its widebody flight operations by 15% over the coming weeks.

India’s aviation authority, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), issued a directive on June 14 for immediate safety inspections. As of now, 26 out of Air India’s 33 Boeing 787 aircraft have successfully passed these checks and have been cleared to fly again. The remaining aircraft are currently undergoing routine maintenance and will resume service only after passing additional safety reviews.

The DGCA has confirmed that Air India’s aircraft and maintenance procedures meet all required safety standards. Expressing deep sorrow, Wilson said, “We are reaching out with heavy hearts following the tragic crash of Air India Flight AI171. Words cannot express the pain we feel for the families and loved ones affected by this devastating event.”
