In a major move, Elon Musk’s space company SpaceX has invested $2 billion into his artificial intelligence startup, xAI. This investment comes after xAI merged with Musk’s social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), earlier this year. As a result of this merger, the value of the combined company has jumped to $113 billion, according to recent reports.

This investment connects Musk’s many tech companies—like SpaceX, Tesla, and X—even more closely through AI. Musk wants to build a future where AI powers everything—from rockets and satellites to chatbots and humanoid robots.
One of the most important parts of this plan is Grok, xAI’s own chatbot. Right now, Grok is being used to handle customer service for Starlink, SpaceX’s internet satellite service. Grok is also being tested for Tesla’s Optimus robots, which are still in development. Musk wants Grok to become the central brain for all his companies, helping to power many different services and tools.
This $2 billion investment is a big deal because SpaceX normally doesn’t put money into other companies. In fact, this is one of SpaceX’s biggest investments ever outside of its usual work in space. It’s not the first time Musk has used one of his companies to help another—he once borrowed money from SpaceX to help fund Tesla and buy Twitter (now X). But this new investment is much larger than those earlier moves.

A Big Bet—But a Risky One
While this new funding boosts Musk’s AI efforts, it also brings risks. SpaceX is already spending a lot of money on Starship, its giant new rocket that has had several delays and test failures. Even though SpaceX reportedly has over $3 billion in cash, putting money into both Starship and xAI at the same time could stretch its finances and make investors nervous.

Still, this bold step shows how serious Musk is about building a future where all his companies work together under a unified AI system, with Grok playing a leading role.
