Why is the US so determined to claim Greenland—and why are its leaders calling it a dangerous power play?
President Donald Trump has once again set his sights on Greenland, calling it a potential asset for US security. But this time, Greenland’s leaders aren’t staying silent.
A high-profile US delegation, led by Usha Vance (wife of VP JD Vance), is heading to Greenland this week. While the White House claims it’s a friendly trip to “celebrate cooperation,” Greenland’s outgoing Prime Minister Mute Egede sees it differently.

“This is not random tourism—it’s a charm offensive to pull Greenland towards the US,” said Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen.
Why Does the US Want Greenland?
Greenland is no ordinary island. It’s rich in rare minerals and home to Pituffik Space Base, a critical US military site. Trump has even hinted at using “force” if needed—a statement that has alarmed both Greenland and Denmark.
Greenland Fights Back
With a new pro-business government taking shape, Greenland’s leaders are standing firm. “We will not be forced into a power game,” said Democrats leader Jens-Frederik Nielsen. Meanwhile, Denmark warns that any US takeover would violate sovereignty.
As US planes and Danish police flood Greenland’s capital, tensions rise. Will this visit ease relations—or push them closer to a diplomatic crisis? One thing’s clear: Greenland isn’t for sale.
