Donald Trump told European leaders this week that Vladimir Putin has no plans to stop the war in Ukraine. This came right after Trump’s phone call with the Russian president, according to The Wall Street Journal.
That’s the hard fact. Here’s the twist: Trump still went ahead and supported Putin’s position. Again.

Trump knows Putin’s game—but plays along anyway
Trump told EU leaders that Putin won’t end the war because he thinks he’s winning. And yet, Trump dropped his own demand for a 30-day ceasefire. Instead, he echoed Putin’s favorite line: “Direct talks with Ukraine.”
Let’s be clear. These so-called “direct talks” have long been a Russian tactic. They don’t end wars—they extend them. Ukraine’s allies know this. Ukraine knows this. So why doesn’t Trump act like he does?
Peace or power play?
Trump’s support of Putin’s position is not just about words. He backed off even after hinting at sanctions if Putin rejected a ceasefire. On Sunday, he suggested sending Secretary of State Marco Rubio and special envoy Keith Kellogg for talks. By Monday, he was threatening to walk away from talks entirely.
One day it’s diplomacy, the next day it’s a shrug. The message? Putin sets the tone—and Trump follows.

What does Putin want? Total control
Let’s not sugarcoat this. Putin’s demands are extreme. He wants Ukraine to recognize all annexed regions as Russian, fire its current leadership, and change its constitution to limit military power and ban NATO ties. According to Reuters, he even wants Russia’s culture embedded into Ukraine’s systems.
These are not peace terms. These are terms of surrender.
Ukraine keeps saying yes. Trump keeps saying no.
Trump has floated three ceasefire plans so far. Ukraine has accepted every single one. Russia has rejected all. Yet somehow, Ukraine keeps getting the blame in Trump’s rhetoric.
It’s like blaming the firefighter because the arsonist won’t stop lighting matches.
