23 Dead in Hours: Israel's New Gaza Offensive Targets 'Empty' Refugee Camps

A Renewed Wave of Violence

Israeli air attacks killed at least 23 people in Gaza on Tuesday. The military also ordered tens of thousands to leave their homes in northern areas, including Jabalia, Beit Lahiya, and Gaza City.

Most of Gaza’s 2.3 million people have had to move many times in the past 18 months of war. With no aid coming in, food and water are running out. The UN and Palestinian leaders say there is no safe place left in Gaza.

A week ago, Israel started fighting again after a two-month break. Since then, nearly 700 Palestinians—mostly women and children—have died. Israel says it is attacking to force Hamas to free 59 hostages, but only 24 may still be alive.

Hamas says Israel broke a January peace deal but is now talking with Qatar, Egypt, and the U.S. to stop the fighting. No agreement has been reached yet.

This war started on October 7, 2023, when Hamas attacked Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking 250 hostages. Since then, Israel’s attacks have killed over 50,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s health officials.
