A regular ride home from school turned into a tragedy on Friday evening when a 7-year-old boy, L Rajat, died after falling from a moving school bus in Magadi, Karnataka.
Rajat, a Class 2 student at SBS School in Magadi Town, was traveling with his 10-year-old sister Dushita. They lived in Hosapalya in Janata Colony. Their parents, Lokesh and Radha, are daily wage workers from Hanur in Kollegal.

What Happened
According to the police, the school bus was driven by R Vinod, 35 years old. Every day, around 30 children use the bus, and usually, a female attendant is there to look after them. Rajat and his sister are the first to get on and the last to get off the bus.
On Friday, after dropping off all the other kids, the woman attendant got off one stop before Rajat and his sister’s. The bus continued with just the two children inside.
While the bus was moving, the door opened because it wasn’t properly locked. The driver, Vinod, asked little Rajat to close the door. As Rajat went near the door to close it, he lost balance, fell out, and was run over by the rear tyre of the bus.
Vinod rushed Rajat to a nearby hospital, but sadly, the child died from his injuries.

Police Action
The police arrested Vinod for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, which is a serious crime. Usually, drivers in accidental death cases are charged with death due to negligence, which is a less serious charge and allows them to get bail easily. But in this case, since Vinod didn’t check if the door was locked and asked a child to close it while the bus was moving, the police took strict action.
Vinod has now been sent to judicial custody in Ramanagara district prison.
