Amidst the ruins of a broken ceasefire, Israel’s expanded ground operations in Gaza spark a new wave of violence and despair. What’s next for the region?

In a dramatic turn of events, Israel has expanded its ground operations in Gaza following the collapse of a fragile ceasefire. This escalation has resulted in significant casualties, with at least 70 Palestinians killed and dozens wounded in recent airstrikes. The conflict, which reignited after a brief period of calm, has once again plunged the region into chaos.

What Happened?

On Thursday, March 20, 2025, Israeli forces launched a series of airstrikes across Gaza, targeting several houses in both northern and southern areas. According to Gaza health officials, these strikes have led to the deaths of at least 70 Palestinians, with many more injured. The Israeli military has also announced that it will no longer allow Palestinians to enter northern Gaza from the south, effectively reinstating a blockade that was in place before January’s ceasefire.

Why Now?

The renewed violence comes after a ceasefire that had broadly held since January collapsed. The Israeli military stated that its ground operations aim to extend control over the Netzarim Corridor, a strategic area that bisects Gaza. This move is seen as an effort to create a buffer zone between the north and south of the enclave. However, Hamas, the Palestinian militant group, has condemned these actions as a “new and dangerous violation” of the ceasefire agreement.

The Human Cost

The conflict has taken a devastating toll on the Palestinian population. Since Tuesday, airstrikes have killed 510 Palestinians, with more than half of the victims being women and children. Gaza’s health authorities report that over 49,000 Palestinians have been killed since the conflict began in October 2023, leaving the enclave in ruins.

What’s Next?

As mediators step up their efforts to broker a new ceasefire, the situation remains tense. Hamas has called on international mediators to “assume their responsibilities,” but no breakthrough has been achieved yet. The international community watches closely, hoping for a resolution that can bring lasting peace to the region.
