Karnataka CM Starts Draft of Rohith Vemula Act

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has written to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, informing him that he has asked his legal team to start preparing a draft of the Rohith Vemula Act. This law aims to stop caste-based discrimination in schools and colleges.

This decision comes just a day after Siddaramaiah promised that his government is fully committed to bringing this law in Karnataka as soon as possible. He made this promise after Rahul Gandhi requested him to take action to prevent caste discrimination in the education system.

In his letter, Siddaramaiah referred to Rahul Gandhi’s earlier mention of how Dr. B.R. Ambedkar had suffered discrimination in his life. Siddaramaiah said it is sad that such incidents still happen today. “No student should have to face the shame and pain that Babasaheb (Ambedkar) went through,” he said.

The Chief Minister also said that his government is committed to creating a fair and equal society. “We must work together to bring Dalits, Adivasis, and other backward communities into the mainstream and ensure they are not discriminated against in education,” he said.

Rahul Gandhi also highlighted the tragic deaths of Rohith Vemula, Payal Tadvi, and Darshan Solanki—students who lost their lives due to caste-based discrimination. He said these deaths are unacceptable and that it’s time to put a stop to such injustice.

Rohith Vemula, a Dalit student, died by suicide in 2016 after facing caste discrimination. The proposed law named after him is meant to protect students like him in the future.
