Cyber Fraudster Busted in Kolkata for UK Amazon Scam

A 29-year-old man linked to a cybercrime gang cheating people in the UK was arrested in Kolkata on Thursday evening. The man, Bikash Kumar Ray, was caught from a flat on the 13th floor of a housing complex named Shukhobrishti, under Technocity police station.

Police said Bikash is closely connected to some gang members who had been arrested earlier.

According to officers, Bikash and an accomplice—only identified by the web ID dh991.dynamichostonline.com—pretended to be Amazon customer service executives. They tricked UK customers into sharing their Amazon login details, accessed their Amazon Pay accounts, and transferred money into their own wallets.

The fraudsters used remote access software to take control of the victims’ phones and computers. They also used fake documents with the Amazon logo to appear genuine.

During the raid, police seized a laptop containing evidence of the scam, including communication with UK victims, their Amazon login credentials, and proof of remote access to their devices.

Investigators also found WhatsApp messages discussing payments to fake call centers, commissions, login data, and bank account details used to collect the stolen money. These chats were found on the accused’s personal mobile phone.

In total, nine mobile phones, a router, and the laptop were taken as evidence. Three of the phones had the WhatsApp chats related to the scam.

Police have filed two cases under the Information Technology Act, 2000 and the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, 2023.
