Supreme Court Rules Bengaluru Hare Krishna Temple Belongs to ISKCON Bangalore

The Supreme Court on Friday decided that the Hare Krishna temple in Bengaluru belongs to the ISKCON Society based in Bengaluru. This overturned a previous decision by the Karnataka High Court, which had given control of the temple to ISKCON Mumbai.

ISKCON Bangalore had asked the Supreme Court to review the High Court’s decision. The High Court had ruled in favor of ISKCON Mumbai, giving them control over the temple and the educational complex in Bengaluru.

A group of two Supreme Court judges, Justices A S Oka and Augustine George Masih, gave the final decision. ISKCON Bangalore had appealed to the Supreme Court on June 2, 2011, after the High Court’s verdict in May 2011.

Before the High Court’s ruling, a local court in Bengaluru in 2009 had decided that the temple belonged to ISKCON Bangalore and stopped ISKCON Mumbai from taking control.

ISKCON Bangalore is a society registered in Karnataka and said it has been running and managing the Bengaluru temple on its own for many years.

ISKCON Mumbai, which is registered under national laws, argued that ISKCON Bangalore is just a branch of their organization and the temple should be under their control.

But the Supreme Court has now confirmed that the Bengaluru temple belongs to ISKCON Bangalore.
