A senior Pakistani military leader said that a nuclear war with India could happen because mistakes can occur during a crisis. General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, Pakistan’s chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, told reporters that during the recent fighting with India, Pakistan did not move closer to using nuclear weapons. But he said it’s possible in the future because when tensions are high, decisions can change quickly.

He said, “Nothing happened this time. But you can’t rule out mistakes because responses during a crisis can be different.”

This statement comes after India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India will not be scared by threats of nuclear weapons from Pakistan.

Pakistani leaders often hint at nuclear threats when they have conflicts or problems with India. Earlier this month, Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif even suggested a nuclear war could happen after India’s military actions called Operation Sindoor.

General Mirza also said that the recent fighting has made the situation more dangerous, and future fights might not be only in Jammu & Kashmir but could involve the whole India and Pakistan.

While Pakistani leaders use nuclear warnings to get attention from the world, India says there is no real nuclear threat now. India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar told a German newspaper that India and Pakistan are still very far from any nuclear war.

Prime Minister Modi and India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said India will not be scared by Pakistan’s nuclear threats and will not change its decisions because of them.

India and Pakistan agreed to stop fighting after a four-day military clash earlier this month. This happened after India carried out strikes on terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) as revenge for a deadly attack in Jammu & Kashmir called the Pahalgam attack.
