In April 2025, 57% of all trades on the NSE’s equity cash segment were executed by algos. In futures and options (F&O), that number touched a massive 70% for FY25, according to data from the National Stock Exchange (NSE).
That’s not a trend. That’s a takeover.

So, what does it mean for the everyday investor?
Algos—short for algorithmic trading—were once playgrounds for hedge funds, mutual fund managers, and foreign investors. Today? Your neighborhood trader with a decent app and a sharp mind might be running an algo strategy without writing a single line of code.
Trading has officially gone DIY.
Modern trading platforms now offer plug-and-play algos—some even in regional languages. All you need is your market view. The app turns it into code and fires off trades when conditions are met. You don’t need to be a tech geek. Just curious.

A retail revolution is here—and it’s coded
According to Kunal Nandwani, CEO of uTrade Solutions, what was once a tool for High Net-Worth Individuals (HNIs) is now being used by retail investors in every corner of the country. The rise in retail algo use has pushed automated trading to record highs in both cash and derivative markets.
In fact, stock futures trading saw 74% of trades done by algos in April. That’s a huge jump from under 60% in FY21.
The speed is insane. But is it good?
Yes and no.
Algos make the market faster, more efficient, and often more liquid. But they also raise questions—are the markets now tilted toward machines? Can human intuition compete? What happens when thousands of bots hit “sell” at the same time?
It’s like Formula 1—exciting to watch, terrifying to drive in.
Still, for India’s new-age traders, the message is clear: adapt or get left behind.
Platforms like Zerodha and Upstox are already offering easy-to-use algo features. With more people using these tools, the Indian market is no longer just human vs. human. It’s human vs. code, or sometimes human using code vs. another human using better code.
Welcome to the game.
