PM Modi Says He’s Invited to G7 Summit in Canada

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he has received an invitation to attend the G7 Summit in Canada later this month. He shared that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney invited him during a phone call on Friday.

Although India is not a G7 member, it can be invited as a guest. This year’s summit will be held from June 15 to 17 in Kananaskis, Alberta, Canada.

PM Modi posted on social media, “Glad to receive a call from Prime Minister Carney… thanked him for the invitation to the G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month. Look forward to our meeting at the Summit.”

This invitation shows an effort from both India and Canada to improve their relationship. Ties between the two countries had worsened in recent years after Canada accused India of being linked to the murder of a Sikh separatist leader and interfering in Canada’s 2019 and 2021 elections. India has denied both claims.

In his post, Modi also said India and Canada will work together again with “renewed energy, mutual respect, and shared interests.”

India is Canada’s 10th biggest trading partner, and Canada is a major supplier of pulses, like lentils, to India. Canada is also leading the G7 group this year as it holds the rotating presidency.
