This Father’s Day, along with your love and thoughtful gifts, give your dad something even more valuable — a gentle reminder to take care of his health, especially when it comes to diabetes.

Diabetes is a growing health problem in India, especially among men over the age of 45. It often develops slowly and silently, but with the right care, it can be prevented or managed. Some common risk factors include increasing age, family history, being overweight (especially belly fat), lack of physical activity, smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and a condition called prediabetes. If your dad has any of these, it’s time to take action early.

Encourage him to go for regular health check-ups to monitor his blood sugar levels. A healthy, balanced diet plays a big role too — one that includes plenty of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean proteins like fish, eggs, paneer or dal, and healthy fats like nuts and olive oil in moderation. It’s also important for your dad to stay active. Even a daily 30-minute walk, some strength training, or simple yoga can help manage blood sugar levels. If he already has diabetes, help him monitor his blood sugar regularly and make sure he takes his medication on time.

Limiting smoking and alcohol can also go a long way in keeping diabetes under control. Stress is another factor that can increase blood sugar, so support your dad in finding relaxing activities like meditation, gardening, or listening to music. Most importantly, stay involved — learn more about diabetes together, attend doctor visits, and show your support.

Diabetes doesn’t have to take over your dad’s life. With simple changes and your encouragement, he can lead a healthier and happier life. This Father’s Day, let’s promise to protect our dads not just with love, but with the gift of better health and a brighter future.
