Markram’s outstanding century was the key to South Africa’s win, especially after he was dismissed for a duck in the first innings. He stood strong under pressure and led the team to victory. South African captain Temba Bavuma also played a gritty knock, remaining unbeaten on 65 despite a hamstring injury.
Rishabh Pant, who played with Markram in the IPL 2025 season, shared a special message for his teammate on social media. On X (formerly Twitter), Pant wrote,
“Well played, Aiden brother. I am so happy for you – what a great knock under pressure. You have made us all proud and congratulations to South Africa on lifting the WTC mace.”

South Africa started Day 4 at 213/2, needing just 69 more runs to win. They had a history of struggling in big matches, often being called “chokers.” Despite this, they stayed calm and finished the job against a strong Australian side, the defending WTC champions.

Before this, South Africa had never won an ICC tournament, losing many knockout games in both One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and T20 World Cups. Their only final appearance was in the 2024 T20 World Cup, where they lost to India after being in a strong position.
This WTC victory is a proud and historic moment for South African cricket, as a determined team without many big stars finally broke the curse and made their nation proud.
