Midjourney just dropped its first-ever video generation model, V1 — and it’s a big deal. Coming only days after Disney and Universal sued the company for copyright infringement, Midjourney is clearly not slowing down. Instead, it’s charging ahead with a bold move into the future of AI video.
What is Midjourney V1?
V1 is a web-only tool that lets users turn any image — from Midjourney or elsewhere — into animated 5-second video clips. You can either let it auto-animate or guide it with your own text prompts. Want a camera zoom, pan, or twist? You can describe that.

Each job spits out four clips, each five seconds long. And yes — you can extend them to 20 seconds. The pricing? It’s 8x the cost of an image, but Midjourney claims it’s still 25x cheaper than competitors like Runway or Pika.
We noticed many MJ videos are getting “overly compressed” when uploaded to social media. We’ve created a new optimized encoder to reduce the issue. When saving videos to share, please right click the video and press “Save for Social Media”. Before/after example below. Thanks! pic.twitter.com/wFfMeg89mK

Why V1 Stands Out
Let’s be real — a lot of AI video looks the same. But Midjourney’s clips look like Midjourney. That’s huge. While others go for realism or cinematic flair, V1 keeps that signature surreal, artsy style people love from MJ’s image models.
It’s only image-to-video (I2V) for now, with no audio or text-to-video options like Google’s Veo 3. But that’s not the point. This is Midjourney laying down the bricks for something bigger.

Holz’s Holodeck Vision
CEO David Holz says V1 is just a step — part of a bigger dream. The long-term goal? Real-time, open-world simulations. Think the Holodeck from Star Trek. For that, you need images, video, and 3D models all working together. V1 is one piece of that puzzle.
Why This Move Matters
This launch doesn’t just follow lawsuits — it flips the script. Instead of backing off, Midjourney doubled down on innovation. And V1, even with its limits, might just be the most creatively distinct AI video tool out right now.
It’s not trying to be like everyone else. It’s being more like… itself.
Midjourney V1 vs. the Rest
Other platforms like Runway and Pika are pushing into realism and storytelling. But MJ’s V1 offers mood. Vibe. Art. If you’re here for cinematic scripts and talking heads, maybe look elsewhere. But if you want your images to move with soul, V1 is worth watching.
This isn’t Midjourney trying to catch up. It’s them changing the game, again. V1 may not be perfect — but it’s weird, bold, and very Midjourney.
