Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has said that Shreyas Iyer is not likely to be selected for India’s Test team anytime soon, even though he has been performing well in other formats.
Shreyas Iyer, who is 30 years old, was India’s top scorer in their winning campaign at the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. He also had an excellent IPL season and did well in domestic red-ball (long format) cricket. Despite all this, Aakash Chopra believes Iyer has to wait his turn because there are many others ahead of him waiting for a Test spot.

“Iyer won’t get a chance right now. There are many others still waiting,” said Chopra on his YouTube channel. “Karun Nair is only now getting chances. Sarfaraz Khan hasn’t played much. Dhruv Jurel is also waiting. If Iyer isn’t even ahead of those players in line, how can he be picked for the Test team?”
In the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy, Iyer scored 480 runs in just 7 innings, with an average of 68.57 and a strike rate of over 90. In the IPL, he had a great season, scoring 604 runs in 17 matches and helping Punjab Kings reach the final after 9 years.
Still, Chopra feels Iyer must stay patient. “Yes, he had a good Ranji season. He played well in the IPL and white-ball matches. But he will have to wait a little longer for his chance in Tests,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sarfaraz Khan is making a strong case for selection. He has already played six Tests, scoring three fifties and a 150. He also scored 92 for India A against the England Lions and hit a century in an intra-squad match before the England series.
