Google has started adding a new “Mark as read” button to Gmail notifications on Android phones. This new feature lets users manage their emails more easily without opening the Gmail app.

What’s New?

Before, Gmail notifications only allowed you to Reply, Archive, or Delete a message. Now, a “Mark as read” option appears at the top of these choices. It lets users mark an email as read directly from the notification bar, without removing it from their inbox.

This update is useful for those times when you want to clear the unread message alert but don’t want to delete or archive the email yet.

When Will You Get It?

The new button is being rolled out slowly. A few users have already seen it, but Google often takes weeks or months to release updates for everyone. So, it might take some time before the feature appears on your device.

This small change can save time and make checking emails on your phone easier. Instead of opening the app or archiving messages you want to keep, you can now just tap “Mark as read” and move on.

Google is also working on other improvements, like a new look for Gmail called the Material 3 Expressive redesign, which is also rolling out gradually.
