James Fishback, a former adviser at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has written an open letter to Tesla’s board of directors asking them to meet with CEO Elon Musk and seek clarity on his recent political ambitions.

Elon Musk recently announced the creation of a new political group called the “America Party.” He made this announcement shortly after posting a poll on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “Today the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”

Fishback strongly criticized this move. In his letter, he said Musk’s focus should remain on running Tesla, not starting a political party. He believes this political step could hurt Tesla and distract Musk from his role as CEO.

Because of Musk’s announcement, Fishback’s investment firm, Azoria Partners, has delayed launching its new Tesla-based exchange-traded fund (ETF), which was set to go public next week. The fund, called Azoria Tesla Convexity ETF, would invest in Tesla shares and options. Fishback said they decided to delay because Musk’s political move might affect Tesla’s future and investor confidence.

He added that when Musk left his position at DOGE in May and returned to focus on Tesla, shareholders felt hopeful. But now, with this political distraction, that confidence is fading.

Fishback also noted that Musk’s work with SpaceX and xAI supports Tesla’s innovation in artificial intelligence and automation. However, launching a political party does not align with Tesla’s mission and may even work against it.

Fishback ended his letter by asking the Tesla board to have a serious conversation with Musk and decide if his political plans are affecting his responsibilities as CEO. He said he still hopes Musk will return his full attention to Tesla.

Meanwhile, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also shared his opinion, saying Musk should focus more on his companies like Tesla and SpaceX rather than politics. He mentioned that the boards of Musk’s companies likely prefer he stays focused on running them, as that’s where his true strength lies.

both investors and government leaders are urging Elon Musk to stay focused on Tesla and not get too involved in political matters that may distract from his business responsibilities.
