A serious case has rocked the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta. A woman student has alleged rape at IIM-Calcutta boys’ hostel by a fellow student. The accused has now been arrested. Police say the incident happened on Friday.
The woman told the police that she was invited to the hostel for a counselling session. She believed it was going to be a normal talk. But the night took a dark turn. According to her, the student offered her a drink. She drank it. Soon after, she felt dizzy and passed out.
When she woke up, she realized she had been sexually assaulted. She also said the accused threatened her not to go to the police.
But she did not stay silent.
She went straight to the Haridevpur Police Station and filed an FIR. The police acted quickly. They detained the accused that same night and later arrested him formally.
Police officers say an investigation is on. They are collecting all evidence and looking into whether more charges should be filed.
This incident of rape at IIM-Calcutta boys’ hostel has shocked many. IIM-C is known as one of the top management institutes in India. Many expect such elite campuses to be safe. But crimes like these show how unsafe even top spaces can be for women.
The case also comes close on the heels of another serious case in Kolkata. Just two weeks ago, a girl was allegedly gangraped at a city law college. These back-to-back incidents show a worrying pattern.
Students, alumni, and women’s rights activists are now demanding answers. Many are calling for stricter hostel checks, better security, and more women-friendly systems on campus.
Safety should not be optional. Whether it’s a top institute like IIM or a small college in a town, no woman should feel unsafe walking into a hostel. No student should fear being drugged or raped under the excuse of a ‘counselling session.’
