ChatGPT, OpenAI’s most popular tool, is back online after a sudden global outage that lasted over three hours on July 16. This was the second major disruption in just over a month — and users are not happy.
The outage started around 6:10 AM IST and hit users across the world — including India, Europe, and North America. Many couldn’t log in at all. Others saw blank screens, broken chats, or failed outputs from the AI. Even developers using OpenAI’s API and creatives using Sora faced serious issues.
By 9:30 AM IST, OpenAI began restoring services. ChatGPT was finally working again. But the damage was done.
Second Outage in Just Over a Month
This is not the first time OpenAI has gone dark. On June 10, ChatGPT went down for more than 10 hours. Before that, there were similar issues in March and January. And each time, OpenAI said little about what actually went wrong.
This time, they blamed “degraded performance” but gave no solid answers.
So now the big question is — how reliable is ChatGPT, really?
Users Are Losing Patience
Millions of people now use ChatGPT and other OpenAI tools in their daily work. Writers, coders, teachers, students — everyone. When ChatGPT stops working, people lose time, money, and trust.
During the July 16 outage, users flooded social media. Some showed screenshots of error messages. Others joked about going back to Google. Many were angry.
Even developers were hit hard. Codex, OpenAI’s coding assistant, failed mid-task for many. And Sora, the new AI video tool, couldn’t load.
Is OpenAI Moving Too Fast?
OpenAI is growing fast. Too fast, maybe. The company is launching new features, pushing updates, and expanding across industries. But the systems need to keep up. Otherwise, growth without stability just causes chaos.
OpenAI has asked users not to keep logging in during outages, as it may trigger account security issues. They also suggest checking the status page for updates.
But that’s not enough anymore. People want answers, not just warnings.
AI is no longer a side tool. It’s now at the center of work for millions.
