In a world where trade, tech, and energy are becoming weapons of power, Jaishankar warns nations to tread carefully. Here’s how India plans to survive and thrive.

In a world where trade, technology, and energy are no longer just tools for growth but weapons of power, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has issued a stark warning. Speaking recently, he highlighted how global systems are being weaponized, creating a complex and challenging landscape for nations like India.

What is the Weaponization of Global Systems?

Weaponization refers to the use of global systems—like trade, technology, and energy—as tools to exert geopolitical influence. Instead of traditional military power, countries are now using economic sanctions, tech embargoes, and control over resources to pressure others.

Jaishankar pointed out three key areas where this is happening:

  1. Trade and Sanctions: Countries are using trade restrictions to force others to align with their agendas.
  2. Technology and Cyberspace: Control over critical technologies, like semiconductors, is becoming a new battleground.
  3. Energy and Resources: Nations are leveraging control over oil and renewable energy to gain geopolitical advantages.

Why Does This Matter?

This shift makes the world more unpredictable and dangerous. Smaller nations, in particular, face immense pressure as they navigate these power struggles. For India, a rising global power, this poses both challenges and opportunities.

India’s Strategy to Navigate This New World
Jaishankar outlined how India plans to tackle these challenges:

  1. Building Strong Alliances: India is forming partnerships with like-minded nations to reduce dependency on any single country.
  2. Boosting Domestic Capabilities: Initiatives like “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” aim to make India self-reliant in manufacturing and technology.
  3. Promoting Multilateral Diplomacy: India is actively engaging in global forums to advocate for a fair and rules-based international order.

The Way Forward

Jaishankar’s message is clear: the world is changing, and nations must adapt. For India, this means staying vigilant, building resilience, and fostering global cooperation. By doing so, India can not only protect its interests but also contribute to a more stable and equitable world.
