A powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake hit off the coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on Monday evening. This caused tsunami warnings across the Pacific Ocean, including in Hawaii. Despite the alerts, people in Hawaii stayed calm and followed safety instructions.

What Happened?

The earthquake struck around 7:24 p.m. ET near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia. Because of the strength of the quake, tsunami warnings were quickly sent out to countries around the Pacific, such as Japan, the U.S. West Coast, and Hawaii.

How Did Hawaii React?

In popular places like Waikiki in Honolulu, officials told people to stay away from the beaches and get ready to move to higher ground. Some tsunami waves did hit the Hawaiian Islands, but they were not very strong, and no major damage was reported.

Locals and tourists stayed calm. One resident said, “Vibes are high. Everyone’s being careful, but there’s no panic.” Videos showed quiet beaches, empty roads, and people waiting indoors—some even playing music while watching the news.

Tsunami Warning Later Downgraded

At first, the tsunami warning was serious, especially on Hawaii’s Big Island and Oahu. People rushed to gas stations, highways were jammed, and evacuation orders were given. The water level dropped by 20 to 30 feet in some places, which is a sign a tsunami might hit.

But later, officials changed the warning to just an advisory after the waves turned out to be smaller than expected. Even so, they warned people to stay off the beaches and out of the water. A tsunami doesn’t come as a single wave—it can have many waves over hours or even a full day.

Safety Measures Taken

  • Black Hawk helicopters and high-water vehicles were on standby for rescue efforts.
  • Buses in dangerous areas were moved to safer places.
  • People were told not to go near the coast to take photos because it could be risky.

Hawaii Governor Josh Green said, “Everything has been OK so far,” but he also reminded everyone that even a small wave can be dangerous—it can move cars, uproot trees, and cause drowning.

Hawaii stayed calm and safe after a huge earthquake in Russia caused tsunami warnings. Though some waves arrived, there was no major damage. Officials are still watching for aftershocks, and people are advised to remain cautious near the water.!
