Prime Minister Narendra Modi has encouraged all Indians to support Swadeshi—buying and selling Indian-made products. He made this strong appeal while addressing a public gathering in Varanasi on Saturday. His message came just after US President Donald Trump announced higher import taxes (tariffs) on products from about 70 countries, including India.

What Happened?

  • The US government has imposed 25% tariffs on Indian goods, starting August 7.
  • Trump also announced penalties on India for buying oil and defense equipment from Russia.
  • In a social media post, Trump said, “India can take its dead economy down with Russia,” showing clear disapproval of India’s trade moves.

PM Modi’s Key Points:

  1. PM Modi said that the world economy is unstable, and every country is now thinking about its own interests.
  2. He reminded everyone that India is on its way to becoming the third-largest economy in the world.
  3. The government is focusing on farmers, small businesses, and job creation for the youth.
  4. He called for a national movement to promote local (Swadeshi) products.
  5. Modi stressed that all citizens, political parties, and leaders must come together to support Indian-made goods.
  6. He urged people to ask themselves: “Was this product made by an Indian?” If yes, then it should be our first choice.
  7. The Prime Minister requested traders and shopkeepers to sell only Swadeshi goods in their stores.
  8. With the festival and wedding season coming up, he encouraged people to buy only Indian products for celebrations.
  9. Modi recalled how some people had shifted their wedding plans back to India in response to his earlier appeals, saying such acts reflect true Swadeshi spirit.
  10. He also talked about his government’s continuous efforts to support farmers and improve their lives.

What Does It Mean?

Modi’s message is clear: support Indian products, especially now when global trade relations are tense. He believes that by buying locally-made goods, we are not just helping Indian businesses but also serving the nation.
