Global tech companies such as Google, Meta, Amazon, and Microsoft are hiring more people in India, even as Indian IT firms like TCS and Infosys are cutting back on hiring.

According to a report by staffing firm Xpheno (quoted by the Economic Times), the number of employees in India at big global companies like Meta, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, Netflix, and Google (known as FAAMNG) has grown by 16% in the past year. They have added over 28,000 new jobs, and now have more than 2.08 lakh employees in India.

This increase is surprising because these same companies have laid off nearly 1 lakh employees globally, especially in the US and Europe. But in India, they are growing — mainly in areas like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Cloud Computing.

“Even in tough times, India is a key location for skilled tech talent,” said Kamal Karanth, co-founder of Xpheno.

There are still over 4,500 job openings at these companies in India, mostly for specialized tech roles.

Indian IT Companies Are Hiring Less

On the other hand, major Indian IT firms like TCS, Infosys, and Wipro are facing a slowdown in hiring. These companies had strong growth in 2022, but their hiring has dropped since then. In 2023 and 2024, they actually reduced their workforce. As of June 2025, they showed just 1.3% growth, with a total employee count of 1.62 million.

TCS recently cut 12,000 jobs, especially at mid and senior levels, because of skill mismatches and changes in business projects.

“The market is changing. Old roles are going away, and new jobs in AI, cloud, and cybersecurity are becoming more important,” said Neeti Sharma, CEO of TeamLease Digital.

Focus on Specialized Digital Skills

Recruitment is now more focused. Companies are mostly hiring people with advanced digital skills. Jobs in older technologies are reducing.

While hiring by global tech firms slowed down slightly at the end of FY25, it bounced back in early FY26 with an 8-10% increase, according to Quess IT Staffing.

Much of this hiring is happening through Global Capability Centres (GCCs) — special offices in India that help global companies develop new AI tools, cloud services, and digital products.

“Even though companies are cutting jobs elsewhere, they are growing in India through GCCs,” said Kapil Joshi, CEO of Quess IT Staffing.

India’s Role as a Global Tech Hub is Growing

Experts say that as technology changes, companies need workers with new skills. So, upskilling (learning new skills) is very important. Even though traditional IT jobs are declining, India is becoming even more important as a hub for innovation and tech development.
