In a shocking incident from Karnataka, 20 peacocks were found dead near a stream in Hanumanthapura village. Villagers discovered the bodies of 17 female and 3 male peacocks, raising serious concerns about what caused their deaths.
After being informed, forest officials visited the site and collected evidence. The dead peacocks were sent for forensic testing, and results are still awaited. The cause of their deaths remains unknown, but it’s creating panic among locals.
Karnataka is home to two official peacock sanctuaries — Adichunchanagiri and Bankapura.
Not the First Incident
This mysterious case comes just a month after 20 monkeys were found dead in Chamarajanagar district. Officials suspected poisoning in that case as well, and foul play was not ruled out.
Even earlier, on June 27, five tigers died in the Male Mahadeshwara Hills Wildlife Sanctuary. It was later found that a tigress and her four cubs died after eating a poisoned cow. Villagers are believed to have poisoned the cow as an act of revenge, after it was dragged into the forest and killed by the tigress.

Three people — Konappa, Madaraja, and Nagaraj from Koppa village — were arrested for this crime.
According to forest department rules, compensation is only paid when cattle are killed by wild animals outside the protected forest area. But if cattle enter the sanctuary, where grazing is not allowed, no compensation is given.
These back-to-back wildlife deaths — of peacocks, monkeys, and tigers — have shocked the state and raised serious questions about animal safety and human-wildlife conflict.
