Bahrain has announced its first big solar power project — a 150 megawatt (MW) solar plant that will produce enough clean electricity to power around 6,300 homes. This marks a major step in the country’s shift towards renewable energy.
The project will be built in South Bahrain, near Bilaj Al Jazayer, covering an area of about 1.2 square kilometers. It is expected to start operating by the third quarter of 2027.

Key Project Details
- Capacity: 150 MW
- Location: South Bahrain, near Bilaj Al Jazayer
- Area: About 1.2 km²
- Timeline:
- Global call for developers: August 14, 2025
- Official bidding: Late 2025
- Operations start: Q3 2027
The project will be developed through a public-private partnership, meaning the government and private companies will work together. Leading global firms are already on board:
- KPMG Fakhro – Financial advisor
- WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff – Technical advisor
- Trowers & Hamlins – Legal advisor
Why This Project Matters
This solar plant is part of Bahrain’s National Renewable Energy Plan, which aims to:
- Have 5% renewable energy by 2025
- Reach 20% by 2035
- Achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2060
Once complete, the plant will:
- Generate enough electricity for 6,300 homes
- Prevent more than 100,000 tons of carbon emissions each year
- Help ensure energy security and reduce dependence on fossil fuels
Bigger Picture
Compared to past projects in Bahrain, this is the largest and most ambitious solar initiative yet. It will use advanced photovoltaic technology and is expected to set the standard for future renewable energy projects in the country.
The Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) will invite international companies to join the project from August 2025, ensuring the use of the latest global technology and expertise.
Bahrain hopes this flagship project will:
- Strengthen its renewable energy sector
- Support sustainable growth
- Contribute to the country’s Vision 2030 goals for economic diversification
This solar plant is more than just an energy project — it’s a step towards a cleaner, greener future for Bahrain.
