Ukraine strikes deep into Russian territory—what’s next in this escalating conflict?
What Happened?
On March 20, 2025, Ukraine launched a drone strike on a Russian strategic bomber airfield, causing a massive blast and fire. The attack hit the Engels airbase, located about 700 km from the front lines of the war.
The strike targeted the Engels base in Saratov, Russia, which houses Russia’s nuclear-capable Tupolev Tu-160 bombers, also known as “White Swans.”
The strike caused secondary explosions, damaged nearby areas, and triggered a local state of emergency. Russia claims it intercepted 132 Ukrainian drones, but some reached their target. Kyiv justified the strike by accusing Russia of using the Engels base to carry out attacks on Ukraine.

How Did It Impact?
Ten people were injured, and local residents found drone fragments in their gardens. The fire caused panic, leading to the evacuation of nearby residents.
What’s Next?
This is not the first time Ukraine has targeted the Engels base. Previous attacks, including one in January 2025, resulted in a fire at an oil depot. As the war intensifies, more such strikes could escalate tensions further.
