Canada’s New PM Defies Trump: ‘We Talk on Our Terms or Not at All’

Would you bend or stand firm? Canada’s new leader chooses defiance.

Newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney made it clear this week that any conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump will happen only “on Canada’s terms.” The statement, delivered during an election campaign stop in Newfoundland, underscores growing tensions between the two neighbors.

Traditionally, a call between the U.S. president and Canada’s new PM happens shortly after the election. But this time, Trump has held off—possibly waiting to see if Carney secures a full mandate in the ongoing general election.

Meanwhile, Trump’s repeated threats of tariffs on Canadian goods and even jokes about annexing Canada have strained relations. Carney didn’t hold back, calling these remarks “disrespectful and unhelpful.”

What’s Next?

With both leaders standing their ground, the question remains: Will diplomacy win, or will tensions escalate further? One thing is certain—Canada isn’t backing down.
